Supporting the development of healthy, productive, drug free youth.

Drug Free Youth In Town (DFYIT) is an organization dedicated to giving recognition to kids who choose to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Why? Because we know how hard it is to be a teenager and to not give in to peer pressure. In other words...because you deserve it!

In school or out of school today's teens face many challenges. We are here to help you help your child to make the right decisions. The incidence of drug use and violence, of pregnancy and suicide among our youth is tragic. DFYIT opens the doors to new possibilities, new opportunities, and a restored belief in themselves as productive members of their community.

DFYIT Local & National

Drug Free Youth In Town (D-FY-IT ) is a registered trademark prevention program providing quality prevention programming for middle and senior high school students in Miami-Dade County Florida since 1992.

Donor Involvement

The investment you make to DFYIT youth enables them to be part of a positive youth movement – and among our communities’ next generation of leaders. Please consider investing in their future.

  • Drug Free Youth In Town (DFYIT) is a nationally recognized, non-profit 501 c3, substance abuse prevention organization committed to empowering youth ages 11-18 to live and promote a drug free lifestyle.

  • DFYIT’s mission is to support the development of healthy, productive drug-free youth. DFYIT focuses on reducing the risk factors that lead youth to use and abuse drugs and alcohol and engage in negative, antisocial behaviors by enhancing protective factors. The program’s objective is to educate students on the dangers of substance use and abuse; provide them with alternative, healthy volunteer opportunities that enhance altruistic efforts; instill and cultivate leadership skills through a variety of in and out-of-school activities; and acknowledge their commitment to remain drug free through community and peer recognition events, all of which have been proven to be effective in
deterring juvenile delinquency. DFYIT does this through a variety of prevention strategies that are both age and culturally appropriate. Today, DFYIT is the only youth substance prevention program implementing a voluntary drug screening program as a condition of membership. Our club members are “Drug Free and Willing to Prove IT”!

History of DFYIT

  • The DFYIT started in 1992 in Miami. After researching and visiting a similar youth prevention program in Texas in the late 1980’s, Co-Founder Marlene Josefsberg began a grass roots campaign to develop a prevention program specifically for youth in South Florida. After three years of diligent planning with local community leaders, cities, schools, and concerned parents, DFYIT was introduced to South Florida at Homestead High School in 1992. Since, DFYIT has grown into one of the largest, school based youth prevention programs in South Florida, servicing over 100,000 youth Club Members since 1992.

DFYIT’s Recipe for Prevention

  • DFYIT follows a very simple strategy or “recipe” to keep our youth drug free. DFYIT incorporates the Communities That Care science-based prevention model (Hawkins and Catalano 1992) as its philosophical framework. It is a social development strategy that promotes the protective factors against drugs, alcohol and other unhealthy behaviors. This is accomplished by helping to create an environment for our youth that will promote healthy lifestyles, strengthen bonds with school, family and community and nurture the individual characteristics of our clients. Students are educated on drug prevention and drug refusal skills and empowered to be leaders in their school and community. They are provided the opportunities to promote their pledge to be drug free and to be leaders through community service and are recognized and rewarded for living and promoting a drug free lifestyle.
